Top 10 table manners for guests.

  1. It is polite to wait until everyone has been served before beginning your meal.
  2. Please don’t speak with your mouth full. Nobody wants to see this.
  3. Take your bread from the bread and butter plate to your left.
  4. If served bread, use the small knife on your bread plate to cut and butter it. Do not use your own knife to take butter from the butter dish on the table; only use the butter knife (the one that’s on the butter dish in the center of the table) to take butter and put on your own plate.
If served a bread roll, do not use your knife to cut it. Only break it apart with your fingers. Do not butter the whole roll at once. Butter a small piece at a time.
  5. If you need to excuse yourself from the table, place your napkin on your chair. No used napkins on the table during the meal and whilst others are still eating.
  6. When the meal has finished, gently place your napkin on the table to your left.
  7. When speaking during the dinner, do not keep your cutlery in your hands or wave them around when speaking. Place them across eachother with the fork on top of the knife. This position indicates that you have paused but have not yet finished.
  8. Once the meal is finished, place your knife and fork together and next to eachother in the center of the plate. This position indicates that you have finished your meal.
  9. Do not place your elbows on the table.
  10. Do not blow your nose or apply makeup or answer your mobile phone at the dinner table. Always excuse yourself and go to the bathroom or powder room.
